You see, like most 20 somethings, we live on a budget. An even tighter budget thanks to the economy and my husband not working this semester because the company he worked for over the summer opted not to hire new staff until after the first quarter. Lovely (please Lord let him find a job before graduation).
So, all the lovely home improvement projects, the ability to actually shop at Anthropologie for more than a candle, actually putting money in savings--yeah, kaput. So, in my desires to re-vamp my wardrobe and really look and feel fantastic (inside and out people, Princesses have self esteem issues too) in 2009, I have relied heavily on my best friend, Target.

Now, if you've been with me for a while, you know my love of Target (is this all she talks about?). But, after last nights "I'm just stopping to get some lotion" (which really, I was-- I didn't even get a cart or basket!) faux pas, I am putting myself on a clothes shopping self inflicted spending freeze until we a) put more money in savings, b) take care of things around that house and c) I buy the husband his graduation present.
This is a really big step for me because I firmly believe that my shopping at Target is way better than me say, stopping at J. Crew or BR on my way home from work, but, I realize I need to chill the heck out. After all, how many black dresses could I possibly need? (The answer? One million. And I'm only 2 shy of that number).
But, my parting gift to myself, was this lovely dress (which naturally looks ten thousand times better in person)
Freaking Target.
So, let's all help keep SP accountable and no more clothes shopping. Even if it was from Target.
Hey, anyone have tips on the whole "shopping in your closet" thing? Because, I clearly suck at that.
But weren't my last Target finds awesome?

I can feel you. When we get back from vacation we are on a strict budget. I know doesn't make sense to take vacation and then be on a budget but we plan budgets for vacations too. Cute dress though!
Ha! I feel you. I never go shopping but the last two weeks it's like I can't stop. Maybe we can do a buddy system and stop together! :)
I need to come shopping with me at Target because I never seem to find anything good.
I hear you. I'm no good at shopping in my closet either. And the black dress is cute and you need it. You really need it. Seriously
Just saw this morning on the Today show how to dress up (or down) a classic white button-down shirt. One of the looks was the white button-down with a short-sleeve/three-quarter sleeve bright sweater over the top, with a layer of pears hanging over both, paired with a black skirt and some fabulous shoes that coordinate with the sweater's color. It was a gorgeous outfit and as long as you had those items: white button-down, spring-colored sweater, pearls, black skirt, and some FAB shoes, you could shop for that and put it together from your closet!
I just got a black dress at Target and paired it with some cute heels. It actually looks really nice! Target to the rescue!
Cute, yes! However, I understand the need to budget; trying to do that more myself.
The tricky thing with Target is that I end up buying more, because the individual items cost less. And I can disguise the trip under the guise of "I need toothpaste" or whatever. I actually save money by going to Nordstrom, insane as that sounds . . .
I have been in a shopping recession as well. I just splurged on a pair of skinny jeans because I paid of all my bills and have finally starting putting away some cash. But I know I should be saving. Try shopping at places that have huge sales... and I love your blog! Hope to see u on mine soon xoxo
My friend J is on a serious budget right now and she swears that if she leaves her debit/credit cards locked in her glove compartment when she goes into a store she doesn't even get the urge to look anywhere. She'll plan ahead and only take cash into target for what she needs. She also says the only other store she has been into in 2 months is the grocery store. She won't even go out to eat in a mall/shopping center/strip mall that has stores she likes so she isn't tempted. We've had to go to the gross movie theater that is across town because it is the only one next to a Home Depot and not in a mall.
I personally kill my Target shopping urge by going in with my husband. He'll let me waste money in the food and cleaning sections but he hates walking through the clothing sections. He nags at me until I don't even want to look anymore. If I think I want to go to the actual mall I tell myself that the traffic is too bad and they're are too many tourists there (I realize that might not work for you. But try to convince yourself that the mall will be really crowded, take too long, frustrating, etc.
i like to take all of my nice clothes to be dry cleaned at once and then pick them up and hang them back in my closet. i always feel like i've been shopping! :)
Your Target finds are awesome and always make me run out to check mine! I can never find the same things you do. I have no advice on shopping in your own closet, that is no fun :-) Ann Taylor Loft and Target are my current favs!
I've been selling things on craiglist to make up for my GottaHaveForSpring shopping craze!
girl, i can't tell you the last time i bought new clothes. its been months. dang economy, new house and baby coming soon have stopped my spending! (er, changed it)
I'm glad you were so tickled that three little princesses are howling at not having any of your pie! :) I was hoping you'd like it.
What about shopping in other people's closets? My sister and I share clothes sometimes (fine, I steal hers.) If you have friends you trust to borrow, you could do that. (I don't.) Also, accessories like scarves and belts can really change things up!
I love to shop at Target too. I found some amazing clothes there. Hope your week is going well. Love & blessings in NC!
Great parting gift and hopefully you can resume more additions again soon =)!!
Oh, Target! It's my arch-nemesis when I, too, impost shopping bans on myself. I always go in "just for Q-tips" and easily spend $100. Just say you're helping to stimulate our failing economy!
target really does have some cool things!
and
i know allllll about the budget issues!
This after that post down there about the black dress arriving via ups? But, of course you're right. You can never have enough black dresses, or shoes.
My only problem with le Targe' is that their clothes only fit tiny people. I tried on a 2x in a shirt once, and it wouldn't button up. COme on!!!! I'm a bit hefty yes, but I'm not a 2x. (sniff)
SP, you can do it! That little black dress will surely tide you over and you have such good taste that the goodies already residing in your closet won't go out of style forever so you're set.
I personally think stores like anthropologie will have to rethink their price points a bit in the wake of the recession or all they will have is people like me going in there with a keychain camera and going home to make everything. ;)
Super cute dress! I heart me some Target too!
I put myself on a spending freeze too- now I just need to put myself on an eating freeze. Sorry to torture you with the cinnamon roll recipe on my blog, but seriously- they are totally worth the calories! :) Hope you're doing good, it's been a while!!!
You are too funny!I am sure you look gorgeous in that dress!
Your dress is really cute!
the dress is gorgeous and i love that you found it at Target! What an amazing find!
